PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an automobile carrying out a self-diagnosis of an assist clutch and capable of carrying out smooth shifting operation even when a shift command is issued during a failure of the assist clutch. SOLUTION: An automatic transmission is provided between an input shaft and an output shaft of a gear type transmission, and it has a torque transmitting means comprising a first frictional clutch 225 provided in at least one transmission range and meshing clutches 220 provided in other transmission ranges. Torque generated by an engine 101 is transmitted to an input shaft 205 of the automatic transmission via a second frictional clutch 201. A transmission control unit 403 controls the first frictional clutch 225, the meshing clutches 220 and the second frictional clutch 201. When the engine 101 is not generating torque, the transmission control unit 403 determines an action to a command given to the first frictional clutch 225 and diagnoses the first frictional clutch 225.
