Compression fitting with resilient stop member

A compression fitting for connecting steel pipes comprises a stop 46 and a compressible element 48 in front of the stop 46. The compressible element may be a flexible spring washer such as a wavy washer, or may be a crushable ring. This allows the pipe to advance into the fitting when the nut 60 is tightened. The fitting has an externally threaded 62 housing 40 with a bore for receiving the pipe 44. A nut 60 engages with the threaded 62 housing and compresses a grip ring 58 and a sealing ring 52 which is housed within a tapered seat 50 of the housing 40. The grip ring 58 and the sealing ring 52 are separated by a washer 56 to limit torsional forces on the seal 52. The fitting is designed for use with steel pipes.
