PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a liquid discharge failure with a reliability on the detection result at a low cost by neither complicating the structure nor moving both a nozzle side and an optical device side. SOLUTION: In the device for detecting the liquid discharge failure 20, a light beam 31 such as a laser light emitted from a laser diode/LED or the like light emitting element 30 is hit to an inspection liquid droplet such as an ink droplet discharged from a nozzle nx or a cleaning liquid, and the scattering light is received by a photo-diode or the like photo-detecting element 33. The liquid discharge failure is detected from photo-detection data of the photo-detecting element. In the device for detecting the liquid discharge failure, a liquid discharge speed of the inspection liquid droplet is made outside the range of a normal liquid discharge speed determined according to a liquid viscosity of the inspection liquid droplet.
