An expansion element contains expanding material (1d), e.g. wax, behind a membrane (1c) that acts on the operating rod (1b). Heating wire (1a) is wound round a hollow carrier (2) within the housing (14). The heater wire material has a positive temperature coefficient of resistance greater than 2/*10<->3/ deg K.
