PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide processes for producing carbohydrate degradation products, in particular, sugars such as pentose and hexose from lignocellulosic materials, as well as processes to obtain alcohols from the sugars.SOLUTION: The process of the invention comprises the steps of: treating a lignocellulosic material with an aqueous solution of pH 11.0-14.0 containing an alcohol, specifically, Calcohol or a phenol, to separate the degradation product from the lignocellulosic material and to obtain a cellulose and hemicellulose rich product; treating the cellulose and hemicellulose rich material with at least one of xylanase and cellulase to obtain sugars as a carbohydrate degradation product; and subjecting the sugars to alcohol fermentation and then separating and recovering the alcohol. It is preferable to use, as the lignocellulosic material, straw, bagasse, switch grass, elephant grass, abaca and/or spelt wheat.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
