PURPOSE: To palletize and depalletize piles while precisely maintaining the arrangement of the piles as flat products by setting the piles on an intermediate support member, and by loading and unloading the piles as a one unit body onto and from the pallet with the use of a conveying element. CONSTITUTION: An uppermost layer 1b of a stack of piles held being loaded on an elevator board 31, is lifted by means of a chain 35 up to an inflow side conveyer 5, and when conveyers 5, 6, 9 are driven, the intermediate support member 2 is conveyed, being integral with the piles 1, toward a transverse conveyer 4, and when it reaches a detector 22, it comes to a stop. Further, an elevator frame 11 is moved upward, and accordingly a belt 10 runs through a slit 2a in the intermediate support member 2 so as to be extended outward by a distance of about 10 mm thereabove. Thus, the row of the piles is received onto the belt 10 so as to be transversely conveyed onto a delivery conveyer. The intermediate support member 2 is conveyed to a support angle 40 attached to an elevator chain 41 by means of the conveyer 9 after the piles 1a are unloaded, and is therefore lowered. Thereafter, an intermediate support member elevator 8 is moved down to a lower end position together with the intermediate support member 2, and accordingly, the intermediate support member 2 is set on a pile conveyer 42.
