PROCESS FOR PREPARING OF PYRIDINE DERIVATED

A process for preparing 3,5-dimethyl-4-chloro pyridine of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting 3,5-dimethyl pyridine of formula (II) with an oxidizing agent i.e. H2O2 to obtain 3,5- dimethyl pyridine-N-oxide of formula (III), and (b) reacting the obtd. cpd. (III) with a chlorinating agent in the presence or absence of a solvent. Pref. the chlorinating agent is selected from POCl3, PCl5 or SO2Cl2; the solvent is toluene. Cpd. (I) is useful as an intermediate in the prepn. of benzimidazole derivs. having an antiulcer activity (esp. omeprazole).
