PURPOSE:To obtain good-contrast images which are not decreased in opening rate by disposing light shielding films in the range wider than the semiconductor parts on a counter substrate which faces the semiconductor parts forming active elements, regulating the overlap of the ends thereof and the ends of the semiconductor parts and regulating the area of the light shielding films. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal 8 which is dispersed and held in a molecular resin is held between the display substrate 7 and the counter substrate 7' formed by arranging the electrodes in the form of a matrix on the transparent insulating substrates 7, 7' and disposing the semiconductor layers 3 as the active elements near the intersected parts of the electrodes. The light shielding films 5 are disposed in the range wider than the semiconductor parts on the counter substrate 7' facing the semiconductor layers 3. The distance (l) in the horizontal direction between the ends of the light shielding films 5 and the ends of the semiconductor layers 3 is specified at 1/2 the spacing (d) between the picture element display electrodes 4 on the display substrate 7 and the counter substrate 7'. Further, the area of the light shielding films 5 is specified <=30% of the area of one picture element. The opening rate in the optical modulation element of a light scattering type is less impaired if the element is formed in such a manner and, therefore, the bright images of the good contrast are obtd. |
