PURPOSE:To improve the precision of discrimination of a person by comparing a projecting data in lateral and longitudinal directions with a standard projecting data in lateral and longitudinal directions so as to discriminate the person being a travelling object. CONSTITUTION:Since input information by a person discrimination section is a changing field before correction of distance, a normalizing section 11 applies normalization of the size of an extracted field to lateral projection data. A smoothing processing section 12 applies smoothing to the normalized projection data to extract a stable shape as a characteristic quantity of the shape of a person. The person is identified depending on the degree of the appearance of the person by taking matching between the lateral shape pattern obtained at the discrimination section 13 and a preset standard lateral shape pattern with a margin stored in a person characteristic information table 14.
