NEW MATERIAL:The hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative composed mainly of the structure expressed by formula I (Ar is <=20C aromatic hydrocarbon group which may be substituted with halogen; 15-70mol% of X is group of formula II and the remaining 85-30mol% is group of formula III; R is H or <=10C hydrocarbon group; Y is OH or NH2; m is 1, 2 or 3; n is integer of 0-20). USE:It is expected to be useful as a raw material for high-performance polymer having excellent heat-resistance and mechanical strength and as an epoxy resin hardener. PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula I can be produced in high efficiency at a low cost by reacting one or more aldehydes of formula IV with one or more aldehydes of formula V and one or more aromatic hydroxy compounds of formula VI in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
