<p>Novel compounds of Formula (I) <FORM:1095187/C2/1> where n is 0, 1 or 2, and each of R and R1 is a hydrogen atom, a C1- 5 alkyl radical or an aryl-substituted C1- 5 alkyl radical, or RO and R1O are ortho to each other and R and R1 together represent a methylene group or a <FORM:1095187/C2/2> radical, but with the proviso that RO and R1O do not represent hydroxy groups on adjacent carbon atoms, and R3 is an acetyl or formyl radical, are prepared by reducing a compound of Formula (II) <FORM:1095187/C2/3> in which R2 is a C1- 5 alkyl or an aryl-substituted C1- 5 alkyl radical, and each of R4 and R5 is a hydrogen atom, a C1- 5 alkyl radical or an aryl-substituted C1- 5 alkyl radical, or R4O and R5O are adjacent to each other, and R4 and R5 together represent a methylene group, with an alkali metal borohydride, to produce a compound of Formula (I) above, R and R1 representing a borate complex when R4O and R5O are hydroxy groups on adjacent carbon atoms, but otherwise being identical with R4 and R5.
