A thermostat element comprises a chamber 14, a mass of petroleum wax within the chamber and having embedded therein a metal having a high thermal conductivity, the metal being in filamentary form, a barrel 11 fixed relative to the chamber and a plunger 12 movable within the barrel by the wax mass on the expansion of the wax. The plunger 12 is separated from the wax by a diaphragm 18 and a plug 19, the movement of the diaphragm being controlled by a finger 22. The metal may be copper or aluminium formed into a knitted mesh and secured to the sides of the chamber to give good conduction of heat throughout the wax.</p> |
