Relating to an arylalkanoylamine derivative having an excellent prolyl endopeptidase inhibitory action and resistances to hypoxia and amnesia and being represented by the following general formula (I): (I) (wherein A represents indanyl group, indenyl group, 1,2,3,4tetrahydronaphthalenyl group or benzofuranyl group; m represents an integer of 0 to 5; Z represents hydroxymethyl group, formyl group, nitrile group, hydroxyiminomethyl group, semicarbazonomethyl group or dialkoxymethyl group; X and Y may be the same or different, and individually represent methylene group or sulfur atom, except for the case wherein A represents indanyl group, indenyl group, or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalenyl group; X and Y both represent methylene group; Z represents hydroxymethyl group or formyl group, and a drug for improving mneme, cerebral circulation and cerebral metabolism with the effective ingredient thereof being the arylalkanoylamine derivative.
