PURPOSE:To keep the knocking level optimum by providing a reference-level correcting means by which the slice level in a knocking judging means is corrected in accordance with both the engine operating conditions other than the engine speed and the environmental conditions. CONSTITUTION:A slice-level correcting means corrects a reference level in the increasing direction to the changing direction in which knocking is hardly caused in response to the change in the engine operating conditions other than the engine speed such as the temperatures of water and in the environmental conditions such as the intake air temperatures and humidity. Thereby the knocking generation rate being judged by knocking judging means can be made constant without being influenced by the change in the engine operating conditions and in the environmental conditions. And the basic ignition timing set by a basic ignition timing setting means can be controlled to an optimum ignition timing in accordance with the occurrence of knocking being judged by a knocking judging means. Thus, the knocking level can be controlled to an optimum level.
