A surgical appliance for drawing together two parts of a fractured bone comprises a bone plate 1 which is attachable by screws 3 to part 4 of the bone and a tensioning coaptor which comprises a tension screw 19 adjustably interconnecting an element attachable by pin 37 to part 5 of the bone and an element which is attached by screw head 12 to bone plate 1. The latter element comprises socket 14 and nut 17 rotatably mounted therein. The nut 17, which is prevented from moving in the axial direction of tension screw 19 by screw 21, has threaded bore 18, knurled flange 23, and aperture 24 for turning the nut, and thereby screwing tension screw 19 so as to draw the two parts of the fractured bone together. Screw 9, which is secured to socket 14, has a head 12 which is disposed eccentrically to the axis of the screw to enable it to be hooked into bone 8 in bone plate 1. The slide of the socket which faces the bone plate has a shape which corresponds to the upper surface of the bone plate and a pair of jaws (15) which are capable of gripping the sides of the bone-plate. The other element comprises a bush 29, which is housed in the head 33 of tension screw 19. Bush 29 has a bore 31 through which the lower part 38 of anchoring pin 37 is inserted. Nut 17 may be provided with a projecting stud, instead of the aperture 24 shown, and it may be turned by appropriate tools. |
