Alkanes and cycloakanes containing at least 5 carbon atoms are nitrosated to the corresponding oxime or oxime salt by passing a mixture containing nitrosyl halide in the hydrocarbon to be nitrosated at a maximum concentration of 5% by weight in front of a source of actinic light, i.e. light of a wavelenght of less than approx. 7,500 </>rA, at a mean linear speed of at least 1 cm./sec. In a preferred embodiment the resulting mixture is contacted with an aqueous solution of a strong inorganic acid, i.e. an inorganic acid which substantially dissociates into ions in aqueous solution, within or outside the irradiation space and the two phases so formed are separated, the aqueous phase, containing the oxime or its salt, being neutralized to separate the oxime or heated to effect the Beckmann transposition and the anide so formed collected and the hydrocarbon phase being recyled to the irradiation space. The nitrosation reaction may be effected in the presence of a gaseous halogen hydracid and/or an inert solvent, e.g. benzene and carbon tetrachloride. |
