Aromatic polyester fibres are dyed by applying in continuous manner an acidified aqueous emulsion containing a suitable disperse dye and, as auxiliary (a) a carboxylic acid or salts thereof containing at least one N atom and a hydrocarbon radical of at least 8C attached via -CO- or -SO2- to an N atom, and thereafter continuously heating to at least 120 DEG C in a steam atmosphere. The composition may also contain (b) an ester of a carboxylic acid having at least 12 C. The acids (a) may have the formula R-X-N(R1)-Y-COOH wherein R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl of at least 8 C which may contain hetero atoms, X is -CO- or -SO2-, R1 is H or low alkyl possibly substituted by -OH or -COOH, Y is low alkylene possibly substituted, directly or via alkylene, by -OH, -COOH, amino or carboxamide or Y is the grouping -alkylene-N(R2)-alkylenewhere R2 is H or lower alkyl possibly substituted by -OH, -COOH or amino. The esters (b) may be derived from alkyl cycloalkyl or aralkyl alcohols and fatty acids or acids (a). The dye composition may have a pH of 4-5 adjusted by means of an organic acid; they may further contain thickeners and organic solvents. Examples are given.
