The exhaust gases from an oxygen blown converter are passed from a hood 19 through a cleaning apparatus 27, 29 to a stack 35 or storage by an induced draught fan running at a constant speed to pass a constant volume of gas equal to the maximum volume of gas evolved at the converter plus a volume of air sufficient to oxidize at least 20% of the maximum volume of CO evolved. A damper 40 enables this rate to be adjusted. Inert gas or steam is injected into the hood 19 near the inlets 39, 22, Fig. 3, for an oxygen lance 17 and an additive shoot 21 to prevent egress of waste gases. A skirt 47, Fig. 3, mounted on wheels running on a track 57 may be moved into the gap between the hood and the converter outlet.</p> |
