In a split phase electric motor-driven compressor, a lost motion coupling 6 connects the motor shaft 2 to the shaft 3 of the compressor such that when the motor is started the coupling part 10 rotates freely with the motor shaft through at least 300 degrees electrical before engaging the coupling part 11 and driving the compressor shaft 3. This allows the motor to run up to speed before being loaded by the compressor. As shown, the part 10 is driving the part 11. When the motor is stopped or at rest the part 11 is returned to the dotted position by a spring or automatically if the rotor of the motor has a smaller weight than that of the movable part of the compressor. |
