973,324. Measuring electrically; weighing apparatus. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1962 [Nov. 21, 1961], No. 43229/62. Headings G1N and G1W. Apparatus for determining the weight of a substance in a fluid stream comprises means for separating the substance from the stream, adding it to a liquid carrier and comparing the weight with an equal volume of the carrier alone. As shown (Fig. 1), a pump 12 consisting of a number of flexible tubes 20-40 compressed by rollers 44 moved continuously from right to left, feeds the test mixture, air and water through tubes 20, 22, 24 respectively to a T-junction 52 where the air is removed and the fluid mixed with a solvent for the test substance, pumped through tube 28, to form two immiscible liquids which are gravity separated at 14. The solvent is pumped off via tube 30, and the lighter liquid comprising the test substance in solution is fed through a coil 84 on one side of a weighing balance 16. A similar coil 84<SP>1</SP> on the other side of the balance 16 is fed with the solvent only, and the deflection of the weighing beam 76, measured by a differential transformer 86, is indicative of the concentration of the test substance in the original fluid stream. The apparatus may be used to determine the butter fat content of milk. Specifications 774,711, 817,070, 827,924, 827,925 and 929,079 are referred to. |
