An arrangement for varying the output of a compressor having a piston 16 reciprocable in a cylinder 15, comprises a fixed volume auxiliary chamber 1 communicating with the cylinder through an adjustable throttle device 2 and a check valve 3 whereby a fraction of the gas compressed in the cylinder flows through the throttle device 2 into the auxiliary chamber to return to the cylinder 15 during the suction stroke of the piston substantially unrestricted through the check valve 3 and also through the throttle device 2. Gas is supplied and discharged from the cylinder through separate inlet and delivery valves. The throttle device may be in the form of a needle valve, cylindrical slide valve or a check valve having a limited lift and may be coaxial with the check valve 3. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the auxiliary chamber is defined by a space formed between the cylinder and the end of the valved suction pipe. The auxiliary chamber may be water cooled. |
