A disposable diaper comprises a flexible back sheet of waterproof material and a pad of absorbent material attached to one surface, the pad and back sheet being formed into a box pleated configuration in at least the crotch region by means of a plurality of longitudinal folds. The absorbent pad 21, Fig. 1, comprises a multiplicity of plies of creped cellulose wadding 25 enclosed on one side and all four edges by a porous hydrophobic non-woven fabric (examples given) top or inner sheet preferably attached to the wadding by a slowly- or non-soluble adhesive and to the overlapping portions of itself along areas 27, 27<SP>1</SP>, 28, 28<SP>1</SP>, which are turned under the wadding and border the bottom face thereof. The pad 21 is centrally adhesively attached to the larger flexible waterproof back sheet 22 (e.g. of polythene) along areas 23, 24 leaving marginal area 30, 31 of waterproof material the bond being strong in sheer but easily severable by peeling the pad from the back sheet. The pad and back sheet are folded along longitudinal fold lines 33, 34, 35, 36, to form the box pleated configuration shown in Fig. 3, the folds being secured by spots of adhesive 37. In applying the diaper to an infant the ends are fanned out (Fig. 5 not shown) passed between the legs, the sides being secured by safety pins or a strip of pressure sensitive tape 32, Fig. 6, located on the underside of the back sheet one in each side flap 31. Several alternative methods of folding the diaper are described and a further embodiment in which the diaper has a reinforcing insert of absorbent material in the crotch region. The adhesive used may be plasticized polyethylene. |
