Water-soluble unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes are oxidized to alkali metal salts of the corresponding acid by cupric oxide or hydroxide in an aqueous alkaline medium in the presence of a noble metal, or oxide or hydroxide thereof. Osmium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, gold and mercury are specified as noble metals. The alkali salt is the product in the reaction medium and may be acidified to yield the acid product. Acrylic and methacrylic salts and acids are prepared in examples. |
