Compounds of the general Formula (V) wherein each of R and R1 represents F or a perhalogenated alkyl radical in which each halogen atom may be F or Cl and in which at least one fluorine atom is attached to each carbon atom, A1 represents one of the radicals each of R 1 and R 2 represents H, Cl or alkyl, R 5 represents H, F, Cl, Br, I or perfluoroalkyl, each of R 3 and R 4 represents H or F, provided that when R 4 and R 5 represent F, R 3 also represents F, Z represents H or an alkali metal atom, and p is an integer from 1 to 9, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula wherein A represents one of the radicals wherein Y is Cl, Br or I, with a Grignard reagent to form a magnesium halide adduct, reacting this adduct with CO 2 to form a magnesium halide salt, acidifying the salt to form the desired compound in which Z = H, and if desired, reacting this acid with an alkali metal hydroxide to form the desired compound in which Z= alkali metal. Compounds of formula (V) above which both R and R1 represent C 1-8 perhaloalkyl radicals are claimed per se. Grignard compounds are obtained by reacting a solution of phenylmagnesium bromide in anhydrous diethyl ether with (CF 3 ) 2 CF-OCF 2 CF 2 I or (CF 2 C 1) 2 CF-O-CF 2 CF 2 I.
