A buckle with a removable tongue comprises a latch movable at right angles to the plane of the tongue, a release member slidable against spring bias in a direction parallel to the tongue and operable by a press button to free the tongue from the buckle. The buckle for securing the tongues 20, 22 on the ends of seat belt straps comprises on either side of an anchor plate 26, with an aperture for the slidable spring biased release member 34, a plaae 92, 52 having a tongue receiving opening, separated by a plate 86, 46, there being a bottom plate 96 and a top plate 58, all the plates being secured together by screws. A press button 62 is pivotally attached to a plate 58 and has lugs 66 engaged in slots and the release member 34. An apertured housing over the press button engages the plate 46. The tongues are retained in the buckle by two pairs of balls 80 and 102 spring urged to engage in recesses in tongues 20, 22 and plates 46, 86 respectively. The tongues are released by pivoting button 62 by pressing thereon thereby sliding the release member 34 so that recesses therein align with the balls which move into them as the tongues are withdrawn controlled by springs 78 and 90 in recesses in plates 46 and 86. In an alternative embodiment the pair of balls 102 is replaced by a cylinder and the corresponding pairs of recesses by single elongated recesses. |
