[Also in Division F4] An apparatus for forming by rolling indentation 3 on the periphery of fins on a heat transfer member (see Division F4) comprises a chuck 20, rotatably driven from a headstock 46, to grip a finned tube 1, the other end of which is supported by a roller assembly comprising three roller wheels 28, 30, 32 rotatably mounted in a base 24 and a single roller wheel 34 rotatably mounted in a transversely movable head 26, and a knurling tool assembly 50 comprising a knurling wheel 36 rotatably mounted on a base 40 movable in the longitudinal direction by means of a lead screw 44 driven from the headstock 46, and a knurling wheel 38 rotatably mounted in a transversely movable head 42. The heads 26, 42 are pneumatically or hydraulically moved and the depth of the indentation 3 depends on the ram pressure applied to the head 42. The knurling wheels 36, 38, the upper of which is slightly laterally offset may be straight cut (as shown) or of a herringbone or diamond pattern and are so arranged that the teeth 48 of the lower wheel 36 strike the fins 2 in generally, but not precisely, the same indentation 3 formed by the upper wheel 38. A flat plate having fins may be formed with indentation thereon by using a knurling tool in conjunction with a milling machine. The apparatus may comprise more than one supporting means having knurling means therebetween and may also be used in conjunction with a fin forming machine as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,865,575 wherein the knurling means is stationary and the tubular workpiece moves longitudinally. |
