In a polarographic cell, a thermistor 40 is mounted in thermal contact with one of the electrodes 22 lying close to a selectively permeable membrane 32 to provide compensation for variations in the permeability of the membrane due to changes in temperature. As shown, a cell for detecting oxygen has a P.T.F.E. or polyethylene membrane 32, gold cathode 22, a spiral wire or strip anode 28 of silver and a KC1 solution electrolyte. The thermistor 40 may be bonded directly to the cathode or may be bonded or gripped in a thermally conductive tube (56) or U bracket (61) brazed or soldered to the cathode. A plurality of thermistors may be provided. For cell capable of working without an external voltage source, the cathode may be gold or silver, the anode zinc, cadmium or lead and the electrolyte potassium hydroxide solution. Cells for sensing hydrogen and CO 2 may be constructed in an analogous manner. |
