The invention concerns a procedure and equipment for determining the condition of a machining cutter. A light source 2 is arranged to form a measuring light 3 in a measuring plane 4, which is preset in a position and at an angle in relation to the machining cutter whereby the intersection of the measuring plane and the surface of the machining cutter forms a measuring line 5 which, or part of which, is illuminated by the measuring light, while the coverage of the measuring light perpendicular to the measuring plane is small. An electro-optical detector 6 optically detects the parts of the measuring line required for determination of the machining cutter's form data. A data processor 7 then makes a comparison between the respective form data, used and new, of the machining cutter. <IMAGE>
