A machine shaft 19 can be driven optionally by a motor (not shown) or manually by a safety hand wheel 18, the coupling between the hand wheel 18 and shaft 19 comprising an outer bush 1 keyed at 10 in the hand wheel and having an integral internal toothed ring 3 which for manual control may be axially moved with the hand wheel against a spring-loaded collar 5 into meshing engagement with a corresponding external toothed ring 4 on an inner flanged bush 2 keyed at 11 to the shaft 19. The spring. loaded collar 5 and spring 6 are located on the flanged bush 2 by the teeth 4 and a collar 7 retained by a circlip 8, the outer bush 1 of the hand wheel being rotatably mounted on the outer bearing surfaces 14 and 15 of the bush flange and collar, the bush assembly being inserted in cartridge form into the hand wheel hub and retained therein by a screwed cap 9, the teeth 3 on the outer bush 1 being normally held spring disengaged in a groove 16 adjacent the teeth 4 on the inner bush 2. The arrangement is preferably constructed so that the hand wheel must be pulled, against the spring loading, away from the machine to engage the teeth for manual control to avoid accidents by inadvertent inward pressure against the hand wheel by the machine operator's body. The interengaging teeth 3, 4 may be replaced by pins and holes or, alternatively, magnetic means may be provided for locking the clutch parts together. |
