A liquid aqueous polish comprises a plurality of dispersed solid particles of polyethylene of average size 0.02-0.5 micron, of molecular weight 7,000-40,000 and containing less than 1% oxygen and less than 0.1% sulphur, and another resinous component and/or waxy component. The resin may be rosin, shellac, Manila loba, terpene resins, terpene phenolic resins, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyvinylidene chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride and acetate, of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile, of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid, of butadiene and styrene, or polymers or copolymers of alkyl, allyl, methallyl crotyl or ethallyl acrylates or methacrylates, or polymers of an allyl cinnamate, phthalate, maleate, malonate or oxalate, of divinyl benzene, dimethallyl itaconate, diallyl fumarate or ketone, divinyl or diallyl ether or the resin may be a condensation product of maleic or fumaric anhydride with resin and mixed polyhydroxy alcohols, pentaerythritol or glycols. The wax may be beeswax, carnauba, candelilla, ounicun esparto, montan, ozokerite, micro-crystalline, paraffin, palm, whale or sugar cane. The aqueous composition may contain 5-50% of the dispersed solid and the surface of the polyethylene particles may be saturated with at least one dispersing agent, e.g. those disclosed in Specifications 949,722, 964,025 and 964,026. |
