A corrugated belt is made by weaving a base fabric, passing the fabric through a needling machine to cover at least one surface of the fabric with fibres mechanically interlocked therewith, stabilizing the belt in the presence of heat and under tension, and treating the surface of the belt to which the fibres have been interlocked with a high friction natural or synthetic elastomer dispersion. The base fabric may be woven using a creel and spool for feeding each individual warp yarn through constant tension devices to the loom.' The surface to which the fibres are interlocked may be singed and sanded after stabilization to provide a smooth surface. The elastomer dispersion may be applied in such a manner that it penetrates the belt from the surface to between one fifth and one half of the thickness and achieves a high concentration of the elastomer at the surface. The elastomer may be an acrylic polymer, polyurethane, a vinyl polymer or copolymer, synthetic rubber or silicone rubber, or a mixture of two or more of the above polymers, e.g. an acrylic aqueous emulsion having a total solid content in the range of 46 to 50% by wt., a specific gravity of 1.02 to 1.06, a pH of 2.5 to 9.5, and/or a surface tension of 37 to 48 dynes per cm; or a natural gum, resin or rubber. The fibres are mechanically locked into the woven base fabric and extend from at least one side thereof to provide an operational surface which is coated with a high friction natural or synthetic elastomer. The base fabric may be woven of yarns formed from spun fibres which are synthetic e.g. polyester, natural or a blend of synthetic and natural fibres or synthetic filaments. The operational surface may have a coefficient of friction in the range 'of 0.65 to 1.0 as defined by ASTM D 1894-63. The interlocked fibres may be synthetic e.g.. of polyester, natural, or a combination of natural and synthetic fibres. |
