A machine 15 for turning and composting town waste is self-propelled along rails 16, 18 over an elongated heap of material 10 of triangular cross-section and comprises a chamber 24 in which rotatable disc harrows 20, 22 throw the material into the upper part where turbulence is created by a reversible fan 28. The material is further aerated by compressed air from fixed jets 62 which are activated automatically as the machine passes over them. The chamber has a triangular entry and exit each formed by walls 25, 27 and guide plates 31 which guide the material into the chamber and re-form the heap after treatment. As shown the heap is supported by an endless belt 12 which is actuated to discharge the material into a hopper after treatment, and a carriage and elevator may be provided to transport the machine to other heaps at different locations and levels, see Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). In another embodiment (see Figs. 5-8, not shown) for material in a fixed trough, the chamber has hydraulically actuated end doors which may be closed over an end section of the heap which is then pushed by the machine to a discharge hopper. |
