Fe (III) COMPLEXES WITH D-, L- AND/OR DL-SERINE ARE IRON SOURCES WITH IMPROVED RESORPTION. G3A. And contain Fe and serine in ratio 1 g. atom Fe : 1 mol. serine. Prepared by mixing an aqs. serine salt soln. (pref. serine Na salt soln.) with aqs. FeCl3 soln. in 1:1 molar ratio, filtering the resulting brown soln., then dialysing until the content of Cl- ions corresponds to the content of complexed Fe atoms (Cl:Fe = 1:1), and subsequently lyophilising the soln. (complexes can also be ppted. by adding large amounts of e.g. EtOH, MeOH or Me2CO). - Pharmaceutical preparations for oral administration contain the above complexes, which have iron resorption in the GI tract of ca. 70% or more. Additional advantages are the complexes' stability over a pH range of 2-8 (ensuring unchanged passage through the GI tract after oral administration) and, because Fe is in the ferric state, almost unlimited storage stability and low toxicity compared with ferrous-amino acid preparations.
