A grease composition is produced by subjecting to homogenization at 15 DEG to 77 DEG C. a lubricating oil, e.g. a mineral oil and a minor proportion of a pulverulent spray-dried oil-dispersable clay product passing a 250-mesh screen U.S. standard which comprises a high base exchange clay bearing on its surfaces 40-100% by weight, based on the clay, of an oleophilic nitrogen compound selected from hydrocarbyl-substituted imidazolines, amino amides formed between fatty acids and mixtures of polyalkylene polyamines, and mixtures of these imidazolines and amine amides, the clay product having a moisture content of 0.5-5.0% by weight and being free from oil (see Division C1). The oil may contain a small amount of water to improve yield and milling characteristics and sodium nitrite to improve anti-corrosion properties. The oil may contain an additional amount of hydrocarbyl-substituted imidazolines and amino amides formed between fatty acids and mixtures of polyalkylene polyamines, the amount of oleophilic nitrogen compound on the clay being at least 60%.ALSO:An oil free, pulverulent oleophilic clay product is prepared by (a) forming a hydrosol of a high base exchange clay, i.e. between 60 and 100 milliequivalents of exchangeable base per 100 grams of clay, e.g. hectorite, (b) adding a mineral acid, e.g. phosphoric acid in an amount equal to the base exchange capacity of the clay, (c) adding 40-100% by weight based on the clay of an oleophilic nitrogen compound selected from hydrocarbyl-substituted imidazolines, amino amides formed between fatty acids and mixtures of polyalkylene polyamines, and mixtures of these two, (d) spray drying the mixture so obtained at 150-760 DEG C. to a product passing a 250-mesh screen, U.S. Standard, and having a moisture content of 0.5-5.0% by weight of water. The hydrocarbyl substituent of the imidazoline may contain 10-20 carbon atoms and further substituents, e.g. aminoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl (preferably containing 1-20 carbon atoms and at least 1 hydroxyl group) alkyl, allyl and amino radicals (aliphatic group having at least one basic nitrogen atom or a group having at least 1 basic heterocyclic nitrogen atom) may be present. The amino amides may be formed from fatty acids containing 10-20 carbon atoms in their molecule at least 50% by weight of the acid containing at least 1 double bond per molecule and/or saturated fatty acids having 10 to 14 carbon atoms and a mixture of polyethylene polyamines, 20-80% by weight of the mixture comprising diethylene diamine the remaining polyethylene polyamines having an average molecular weight within the range 250-400. The hydrocarbyl-substituted imidazolines and amino amines may be used in amounts of 40-75% and 50-100% respectively by weight of the clay, if mixtures are used 40% by weight of amino amide and at least 10% by weight of the hydrocarbyl substituted imidazolines are used. |
