Prepn of acetylene by partial oxidation of - hydrocarbons at normal pressure

The oxidation product is quenched, compressed to 5-20 atm. and acetylene separated from the compressed gases. The lean gas remaining or part of it is treated to adjust the ratio H2 : (CO+CO2) to 3.1 : 1 to 4.1 : 1, the gases are methanised and the methane-rich gases obtained are recycled to the partial oxidation stage. The H2 : (CO+CO2) ratio may be adjusted by converting part of the CO with water vapour to H2 and CO2 or scrubbing to remove CO2. Any lean gas not methanised may be burnt to provide heat.
