A composition for combatting rodents by producing epididymal lesions and infertility upon oral administration thereto comprises 0.05 to 0.5% by weight of a compound having the general formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or the acyl radical of a C 1-18 hydrocarbon carboxylic acid and R 2 is hydrogen, an acyl radical of a C 1-18 hydrocarbon carboxylic acid, C 1-16 alkyl, C 3-16 alkenyl or C 3-6 alkynyl together with at least one edible solid dietary constituent. The preferred compound is 3-chloro-1,2-propane-diol. The composition may also contain additional active ingredients effective in combatting rodents such as anti-coagulant-rodenticides, e.g. 2-diphenyl-acetyl-1,3-indandione and its salts, 3- (α-ethylbenzyl)-4-hydroxy-coumarin and its pchloro benzyl derivative, 3-(α-acetonyl-4-chlorobenzyl)-4-hydroxycoumarin, 3-(α-acetonylfurfuryl)-4-hydroxycoumarin, 2-pivalyl-1,3-indandione, and the calcium salt of 2-isovaleryl- 1,3-indandione; stomach poisons, e.g. sodium fluoroacetate,α- naphthylthiourea, thallium sulphate, zinc phosphide, arsenic trioxide, strychnine and red squill; estrogens, e.g. mestranol, ethinyl estradiol, diethylstilbestrol, and chlorotrianisene; androgens, e.g. fluoxy-mestrone and methyl testosterone; and progestogens, e.g. melengestrol acetate, ethisterone, medroxyprogesterone acetate and norethindrone.</p> |
