摘要 A lubricating grease by dispersing a synthetic clay-like mineral of general formula <FORM:1121501/C4-C5/1> where M is an organic cation, x is greater than zero and less than 6, y is at least 1.0 and less than 4, and n is an integer from 1-3, in, for example a light spindle oil. Preparation of the clay, see Division C1.ALSO:Synthetic clay-like minerals of general formula <FORM:1121501/C1/1> where x = 0-6, y = 1-4, n = 1-3 (integral) and M is a replaceable organic or inorganic cation, as given in claim 1 of Specification 1,054,111, are prepared by the method of that application in which the final heat treatment is omitted. The reaction product of the process of the parent application may be further reacted in an aqueous medium with an organic compound or a salt thereof which compound gives rise in the aqueous medium to exhangeable organic ammonium cations. The washing and dewatering steps of the process of the parent application may also be omitted. Examples of organic compounds or salts thereof from which the cations may be derived are the salts (including quaternary salts) of primary, secondary and tertiary amines, such mono-, di-, tri- and polyamines as well as aliphatic, aromatic, cyclic and heterocyclic amines and substituted derivatives thereof. The amine in the salt may have an organic radical of at least 18 carbon atoms chain length. The organic compound may be employed in amount to give from 0.9 to 1.4 equivalents of organic cations, so that in the synthetic clay product substantially all the exchangeable cations is organic cations. The organic radical present may have at least 10 carbon atoms. Compounds specified are "Ethomeens" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Ethoduomeens" (Registered Trade Mark). Other organic ammonium cations specified are dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium, trimethyloctadecyl ammonium, dodecyl ammonium, hexadecyl ammonium, octadecyl ammonium, dioctadecylmorpholinium, 1 - propyl - 2 - octadecylimidazolinium and bis(-2-hydroxy ethyl) octadecyl ammonium. The organic cationic materials may be prepared by reaction of the metallic cationic clays with the organic compounds or salt thereof in aqueous medium. The product may be separated by washing, dewatering and drying. The exchange may be carried out on the dry metallic cationic material or on the slurry from its preparation, or on the filter cake. Alternatively, the adduct may be formed directly by conducting the clay synthesis in the presence of the organic compound. These adducts may be used in the preparation of lubricating greases. If the exchange reaction is carried out with at least one part five equivalents of the organic compound, substantially the whole of the metal is replaced and the excess organic cation is detained in the synthetic clay which will then have d001 spacing of 38/sB3 </>rA. These latter products may be used in the preparation of organo sols with liquid aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. petroleum ether, benzene, toluene and xylene, which disperse in water to form water-in-oil emulsions.
