The oxide consists of a solid solution of calcium ions in lanthanum chromite in which 1-15% lanthanum ions are replaced by calcium ions. Specifically, a mixture of lanthanum oxide, calcium carbonate and chromium oxide is calcined at 1600 degrees C for 1 hour to a solid (LaCa) CrO3 solution which is pulverised and moulded together with a binder admixtue. The moulded solution is then calcined at 1750-1850 degrees in an oxidizing atmosphere. The binder is boric acid.
