The invention comprises compounds of the Formula I where R 2 is aryl or C 1-6 alkyl, R 3 is hydrogen or methyl, R is C 1-6 alkyl, R 1 is C 1-6 alkyl or alkoxy, monoalkylamino or dialkylamino, or, if R 2 is aryl or C 2-6 alkyl, R 1 may be aryl, X is oxygen or sulphur and Y is oxygen, -NR 4 - or -NH-, where R 4 is alkyl. The compounds of Formula I may be prepared by reacting an appropriate 2 - hydroxy - 3 - cyano - pyridine derivative, or a sodium, potassium or ammonium salt thereof, with a halide of the Formula III or by reacting an appropriate 2-halogeno-3- cyanopyridine derivative with an acid or salt or the Formula V where M is hydrogen, sodium, potassium or ammonium. The compounds of Formula I may be used as insecticides, acaricides or fungicides, either alone or as the active ingredient in a composition comprising a solid or liquid diluent or carrier. The sodium salt of 2-hydroxy-3-cyan-6-isopropylpyridine is prepared by reacting 2- hydroxy - 3 - cyan - 6 - isopropylpyridine with sodium methylate. |
