1,216,271. Unsaturated alcohols. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 11 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 8840/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Unsaturated primary alcohols are prepared by reacting an olefin showing chain branching at the double bond with gaseous formaldehyde in the presence of some, but less than 0-1 moles per mole of formaldehyde of a boron halide at 0-150‹ C. An inert solvent, e.g. a chlorinated hydrocarbon, may be used and the formaldehyde preferably contains less than 30% water. Examples prepare unsaturated C 9 alcohols fromα-di-isobutylene. 2-Methylpentene-1 and -2, and 2-ethylhexene-1 are also specified as starting materials.
|
