Coating composition comprising a soft or blended bitumen emulsion, a filter such as sand and, optinally an emulsion-breaking agent, is improved by the addition of a finely comminuted (0.5 mm) hard bitumen (softening point above 80 degrees C; penetration less than 50), in a ratio of 10:90 to 70:30 with respect to the soft bitumen. When the emulsion is broken and the soft bitumen settles, it combines with the hard bitumen, so that the softening point of the coating is raised. The speed of the emulsion-breaking is not affected.
