Substitution in the NH group contained in a heterocyclic ring is effected in a Me2SO medium with a reagent of formula X-CH2-R-Y, wherein X is an electrophilic group, R is divalent alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or a direct CH2-Y bond, and Y is H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, alkoxyaryl, aryloxyamino, alkylamino or OH. Examples describe the preparation of the following, using the reagents indicated in parentheses: N - 2 - dimethylaminoethyl - carbazole - HCl (Me2NC2H4Cl-HCl), N - methylphenothiazine (Me2SO4), N - methallylphenothiazine (CH2= CMeCH2Cl), N - 2 - hydroxyethylcarbazole (ClC2H4OH), N - 3 - m - methoxyphenylpropylcarbazole (3 - MeOC6H4C3H6Br), N-5 - hexenylcarbazole (1 - bromohexene - 5), N-ethylacridone (EtBr) and N-ethylcarbazole (EtBr). |
