A tape punching mechanism comprises holders 1, 11, Fig. 3, for punches 2, 21 co-operable with holes in a die-plate 7, associated with a support 6, leaf springs 11, 111, 12, 121, 13, 13! and 14, 141 being attached between the support and the punch holders, and the springs of a pair, which form a Vee, being relatively spaced a vertical distance x which is at least equal to the length of stroke of the punch. The vertical distance y between different pairs of springs is also at least equal to the length of stroke of the punch. The pairs of springs are contained in four parallel planes. The distance between the points of attachment to the support of each of the pairs of leaf springs exceeds the centre distance between the punch holders. The springs contained in the same plane are integral parts of a comb the back of which is rigidly clamped to the support. The comb is an integral stamping punched out of a blank of sheet metal e.g. an iron-nickel alloy. In a modification, the springs 11 to 14, Fig. 6, are inclined to the die plate 7 at an angle α which is so chosen in relation to the length of stroke h of the punch and the free length R of the springs that at a level E of the punch 2 in the hole 8 in the die-plate 7, the tangent T to the path B of a point B on the punch is parallel to the axis MA of the hole 8, that the punch axis SA is parallel to the axis MA irrespective of the position of the point B and that the axes SA and MA coincide at the level E in the hole 8.
