Round fuel particles, between 150 and 1500 mu in diameter, are coated with carbide and/or graphite and/or metallic material and are powder moulded into groups of conical wedges which are placed pointing inwards between the metal end grids of a metal jacket so that a free flow of coolant can take place from one end of the jacket to the other. The shape of the cones is such that the total cross sectional area of the coolant path is reasonably constant.
