Homopolyamides or copolyamides contain. ing up to 20 wt. per cent of the minor monomer are modified to improve their affinity for acid dyestuffs by adding 1 to 5 wt. per cent of an alkylene carbonate to the monomer(s) before condensation. The use of such carbonates in the anionic polymerization of lactams is acknowledged and such processes are disclaimed. It is suggested that chain lengthening is effected by esterification of carboxyl groups by the corresponding glycol. To obtain spinnable products a shorter polymerization time or greater amount of chain terminator is used compared to condensation in the absence of the modifier. In examples, ethylene carbonate is incorporated in nylon 66, 6 or 66/6, acetic acid being used as chain terminator. |
