A process for the preparation of compounds of Formula I comprises carrying out the following steps consecutively: (a) a compound of Formula VII is reacted with an α-haloacetyl halide of Formula XIII wherein Hal is Cl, Br or I, or with its functional equivalent as an acylating agent for a primary amino group, in the presence of a base such as pyridine, an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate, to produce an α-haloacetamido compound of Formula VIII (b) the α-haloacetamido compound is reacted in the presence of base with a mercaptan of Formula IX Pharmaceutical compositions having antibiotic properties may be prepared from compounds of Formula I in admixture with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. A method of treating animals, other than man, to cure them of diseases caused by Gram-positive and Gramnegative bacteria by treating them with effective amounts of compounds of Formula I is described. |
