A process for the manufacture of dimethyl terephthalate comprises contacting a melt of a reaction mixture of terephthalic acid and methyl alcohol having a conversion of at least 70 per cent with methyl alcohol vapour in the presence of a tin-containing organic compound which is a tin salt of an organic acid, an organo-tin compound having an Sn-C bond, a tin alkoxide or a tin phenolate. Examples are furnished and apparatus for carrying out the process continuously is described referring to the drawing (not shown). |
