A herbicidal composition containing two components having an exceptionally increased activity in combination, as compared with their separate activites. It should always have as one of the components: a) a 3-halogeno-4-hydroxy-benzonitrile or a functional deriv., which are known cpds. combined with any one of the following: b) an aliphatic acid of form. (I) or a functional deriv. R=H or a halogen-atom or a straight or branched alkyl group with 1-4C atoms. The substituents R1, which may be the same or different, are H, halogen. c) a triazine of gen. from. (II): or an acid addn. salt thereof. R2 = H or a halogen-atom, or an alkyl-, alkoxy-or alkylmercapto group with 1-4 C atoms; R3,R4,R5 and R6 are same or different: H or a straight or branched alkyl-group with 1-6C atoms. d) a uracil of gen. form (III): R7 = H or a halogen atom; R8 and R9, same or different, are same as R3 in (II). e) a phenyl cpid. of gen. form. (IV): The phenyl ring "a" may be subst. by one or more halogen, alkyl with 1-4C atoms, alkoxy in which the alkyl group has 1-4C atoms, or amino or nitro; X = OH, -COOH, -AlkCOOH, -OAlk.COOH or -NH.CO.Y (where Alk. is a straight or branched alkylene chain with 1-9C atoms and Y = an alkylor alkoxy group, in which the carbon chain may be straight or branched-, satd. or unsatd., containing 1-6C atoms and may be subst. with one or more halogen-atoms, or Y = an amino group -NAB (where A and B are the same or different: H, or straight or branched alkyl- or alkoxy group with 1-6C atoms) or a suitable functional deriv. or quaternary salt of same; f) a picoline cpd. of gen. form. (V): The pyridyl ring "b" may be subst. with one or more substits. as may be present in the phenylring "a" of cmpd. (iv) or its functional deriv. g) a thiocyanate cpd. with gen. form. (VI): M.CNS (VI) where M = an alkali- or alkaline-earth metal or an ammonium group; h) a pyridinium cpid. of gen. form. (VII): or a functional deriv. thereof. A and B are as previously defined. i) a cpd. of form. (VIII): or its functional deriv. A high measure of control over "unwated growth of plants", e.g. grass on motorways, etc. |
