The bi-metal 10 of a thermostat for use in the main cooling compartment of a refrigerator is provided with an anticipatory heater 32 arranged to be energized when the contacts of the thermostat are open so as to reduce the temperature differential between the freezing compartment and the evaporation chamber of the refrigerator. The bi-metal has a central tongue 17 co-operating with an adjustable plunger 31 moved by a knob 30 to set the temperature and actuating a snap acting contact 19 which co-operates with a fixed contact 22. The bi-metal 10; two terminals 14, 23; fixed contact 22; and a bracket 26 are clamped between insulating blocks 13 supported in a housing 40 slotted at 41 to permit circulation of air. The bracket 26 supports a resistor 32 forming the heater which is connected directly to the terminals 14, 23. The resistor may be replaced by a heating spiral or an incandescent lamp. |
