1,153,302. Depolarizing electrodes for production of sodium chlorate. SOC. D'ELECTROCHIMIE, D'ELECTRO-METALLURGIE ET DES ACIERIES ELECTRIQUES D'UGINE. Aug. 16, 1966 [Aug. 16, 1965], No. 36672/66. Heading C7B. An electrode for use as depolarizing cathode in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions comprises a closed hollow body to be mounted during operation with its longitudinal axis vertical, the body including an upper portion 1 of micro-porous material of which at least a part of the external surface is electrolytically active and which is provided with means at its upper end for introducing gas into its hollow interior, and a lower portion provided with uniformly distributed holes or perforations 3 for the escape of gas bubbles 11 from the interior of the electrode body, and means for controlling the rate of flow of gas through said holes. The body may comprise a closed hollow cylinder or two spaced plates hermetically sealed together. As shown the electrode is provided with an air feed pipe 4 having a flow-meter 5, a water feed pipe 9 with valve 10 for admitting water under pressure to the interior of the electrode for expelling electrolyte from within the electrode, and a gas outlet 6, having a pressure gauge 7 and an adjustable nozzle 8. Sodium chlorate may be produced using an electrode in which the porous plates are of sintered silver in brass frames brazed together with tin, the brazing seams and the frames being coated with an acrylic resin, and graphite anodes. |
